2010 Bend WinterFest | Feb 12 - 14, 2010

While it seems a little like Spring all over Bend, we’re still in the heart of Winter. To get yourself back in the Wintery swing of things, gather the crew together and head over to one of Bend’s finest events, the 2010 Bend WinterFest.

This year’s event will be, once again, hosted at the Shops at the Old Mill, February 12-14th. The WF is an annual three-day festival of snow sports, demonstrations, music, wine, and food. I remember the days the event was hosted downtown, which was my personal favorite. I like the whole old-school vibe that downtown exudes. Plus, it was a nice little boost for the locally-owned downtown businesses, but I get the reason for the switch. (more…)

Romantic-comedy regulars Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker finally unite in this fish-out-of-water laugher. The actors play Paul and Meryl Morgan, a Manhattan couple whose marriage is in danger. But it turns out all they may need is a change of scenery: when the Morgans witness a murder and are sent by the government to small-town Wyoming to hide from the killers, their marriage shows signs of recovery.

Rated PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking.
2 hr 40 min
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

Cyclocross Nationals - Old Mill District - 12/10 thru 12-13

Cyclocross Nationals - Old Mill District - 12/10 thru 12-13

More than 1600 cyclists have converged on Bend to compete in the largest-ever USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships. The festivities begin today and run through Sunday, December 13.

Cyclocross racing is basically a form of racing that combines all-terrain, smooth, and obstacled surfaces. Riders not only ride the bikes through the course, but also have to jump off and carry the bike in certain areas. Basically, the bikes resemble a normal street racing bike with the addition of knobby tires.

This week’s event is more than just bike racing. All over town you can find workshops, music events, special meet n’ greets, etc. (more…)

Lahaina Gallery, Shops at the Old Mill.

What is First Friday Gallery Walk (really) and what’s the difference between it and Art Hop? There seems to be a little confusion about this one. We’ll try to clear it up.

First Friday Gallery Walk, sometimes referred to as First Friday Art Walk, is an event that is held on the first Friday of every month,  hosted by the Bend Gallery Association. BGA member galleries stay open until 9pm and showcase specialized exhibits, artist meet-and-greets, and other special events.

To help get you to each of the BGA member galleries, Green Energy Transport can pick you up in front of 900 Wall Restaurant in downtown Bend around 5pm and take you to designated drop off areas in NW Crossing and the Shops at the Old Mill. (more…)

Visit your friendly Open Mic Night

Earlier today we got an email from another venue telling us about their new open mic night. Over the last couple months the ‘open mic night’ concept has been popping up at venues all over Bend.

I’ve been to my fair share of these events and I’ve got to tell you there’s a lot of untapped talent here. I’ve heard some soloists, side-projects, and newly formed bands trying out new material. A lot of these musicians are very creative without the venue to display it. That’s the great thing about Open Mic.

Here’s a list of Open Mics to check out. (more…)
